In late August, I worked my first gig! John Hollier & The Reverie performed at Creekside Grille in Shippensburg. They drove all the way up from Nashville, TN. The opener was Cougar Beatrice, which I believe came up from Virginia. Both bands played original music they had written, which was awesome. All the previous work had been leading up to this show, which added a lot of excitement. My main job was to help with load-in/out, assist during the show, and record video.
The band had 5 members: lead and rhythm guitarists, bassist, drummer, and even a saxophonist! They did not have their own rack or in-ear monitors, so we had to set up floor monitors for each member and get all of their inputs labeled for the snake to the PA. Nick worked with me to ensure each input was sorted and labeled, since we had to do the same for the opener, who sound-checked after the headliner. That meant a lot of swapping cables depending on which band was playing at the moment. Luckily, we didn’t have to swap the drum set during changeover, as the opener used the headliner’s kit. That saved a lot of work.
I had a three-camera setup: my Panasonic Lumix G7 capturing the full band shot, a Sony camera (not quite sure what model, maybe an a6700?) that Josh, the lighting guy, let me borrow during the show, set up on a tripod for a side profile, and my iPhone on the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 for handheld shots and close-ups.
There were no major technical issues during the show, and it was a success! Shout out to Nick for making the band sound great and Josh for putting on a light show! I had a lot of fun and learned a lot!
